Holding onto Hope
Ours was an immensely difficult journey, full of tentative hope and sweet dreams that always seemed just beyond our reach. Through it all, Tahareinu were there for us, comforting us on our losses and encouraging us to try again. Cycle after cycle, we cried to them. They were always available. Literally. Even when certain circumstances saw us calling them at 3:00am.
One and a half years ago, we started yet another IVF cycle, praying as always that this would be the last one. After a round of various medical procedures and doctors appointments, we finally made it to the clinic for the procedure. Before we left, the doctor told us to come back in two weeks. We spent those two weeks praying like never before. It really seemed like this might be it. When the two weeks were up, we were overjoyed to hear that we were expecting. The first person we called after our parents was R’ Yitzchok, of course.
During a routine ultrasound, the doctor looked at the screen and informed us that the pregnancy had only a 50% chance of success. We were told to come back the next week. I’ll never forget that week. We had made it all this way; we just had to finally have our happily ever after.
And yet, it was not to be. One minute we were flying high with the hopes of a laughter-filled future; the next minute we were left with nothing. We were heartbroken. After four-and-a-half years of waiting, trying, dreaming – the pain was simply too great. I called our Tahareinu case manager, broke down in tears and told him that I just couldn’t do it anymore. He told me to come to the office with my wife for a meeting.
At the meeting they told us, ‘You’ve just experienced a tremendous tragedy. But Tahareinu hasn’t given up yet. We must give the maximum hope to every couple.’ They asked us to do one more cycle – ‘for the organization’ – and we agreed.
And so it began all over again. This time, we found ourselves in a different doctor’s clinic. Thank G-d, the IVF procedure was successful, but by now we knew to contain our optimism. After two weeks, we found out that we were once again expecting.
The pregnancy was difficult and we were always anxious, mindful that it might not last. Tahareinu held our hands throughout it all, never letting us give up. And yes, with G-d’s help, we finally have a beautiful, healthy baby boy.
Tahareinu wants to help, but without finances they are limited in what they can do. You can change that. Please help them make our needs come true.
