See that man?” Rabbi Avigdor Miller asked his friend. “He is one of the 36 tzaddikim of the generation.”
HaRav Shmuel Elchonon Brog ztl achieved a level of perfection such that his revered father-in-law, Rabbi Avigdor Miller zt”l, actually called him one of the 36 tzaddikim of the generation, and asserted that he was of such a stature that he was worthy of being Moshiach.
This year, the Yeshiva that Rav Miller founded pays tribute to the son-in-law he spoke of so highly. On Sunday, May 5, the many followers of Rabbi Avigdor Miller, together with parents, alumni, and friends of the Yeshiva, will gather in a show of support at the Yeshiva’s 30th Annual Dinner at Kings Terrace (815 Kings Highway, Brooklyn).
It is only fitting that this year’s Dinner pays tribute to the life of this remarkable Talmid Chacham and his Talmidim. Rabbi Simcha Bunim Cohen, Rabbi Brog’s son-in-law and Rav of Kahal Ateres Yeshaya in Lakewood, is the guest speaker.
For over seven decades, Rav Brog was a fixture in the Bais Medrash of Yeshiva Rabbeinu Chaim Berlin and in the lives of its talmidim. His hasmada was legendary, and his acts of chesed—large and small, known and unknown—seem almost superhuman. Many people close to him recall that he never answered a question without thinking about it first, sometimes for a very long time—but it was always worth the wait. Also, he would never hang up at the end of a phone call until the other party hung up first. It was a reflection of his sensitivity to others.
He often counseled people, “Yohov is to give; Ahav is to love. If you don’t like someone, give to him and you will automatically like him.” He would advise parents, “If children can’t be kids when they’re young, they’ll be kids when they’re adults.”
The Yeshiva is proud to recognize five of Rav Brog’s closest talmidim as our Guests of Honor: Reb Moshe Wydra, Reb Shimmon Schwartz, the family of Reb Boruch Berger z”l, Rabbi Yaakov Mitnick, and Reb Yitzchok Wolfowitz.
At the Dinner, the Yeshiva will reflect on another year of accomplishments. Its Rabbi Avigdor Miller Simchas Hachaim Foundation published three new books by Rabbi Miller in 2012, and its SimchaMinute email is read in 30 countries. In the year ahead, the Yeshiva looks forward to the groundbreaking of its new Bais Medrash in Lakewood, and the publication of at least three more Rabbi Miller books.
“We are delighted to see the Yeshiva thriving,” commented executive director Rabbi Yehuda Brog. “This year, the Yeshiva looks forward to the construction of our new Bais Medrash in Lakewood and the publication of at least three new sfarim by Rabbi Avigdor Miller. But none of it can happen without our friends.
“Besides giving us the opportunity to greet our supporters face-to-face, the Dinner is our largest fundraiser of the year. The participation of our friends and supporters is crucial.”
The Dinner will be at Kings Terrace, 815 Kings Highway in Brooklyn. The reception begins at 5:00, and bentching will be promptly at 9:00. For reservations or to place a Journal ad, please call the Yeshiva office at (718) 258-7400 or email [email protected].
