Brooklyn: Greenfield Giving Away Free Trees on Lag BaOmer

gfnAs part of his initiative to help the environment and beautify local neighborhoods, Councilman David G. Greenfield is hosting a free tree giveaway this Sunday, Lag BaOmer, April 28 at the Boro Park Y Senior Center. The event, held in partnership with MillionTreesNYC and the New York Restoration Project (NYRP), will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. or until the 100 free trees have been distributed. Pre-registration for this opportunity to spruce up your property and improve the local environment and air quality is closed, but a limited number of trees will be available on Sunday on a first-come, first-served basis, so anyone who would like to receive a free tree is encouraged to arrive as early as possible.

“I am proud to host another tree giveaway event this Sunday, Lag BaOmer, to help beautify our neighborhoods for years to come. I can’t think of a better day to do this than on Lag BaOmer, only a few weeks before Shavuos. My thanks to everyone at the New York Restoration Project and the Boro Park Y for helping make this great event a reality, and to all of the residents who have already registered for their free tree. I have no doubts that this great program will have a lasting impact on Boro Park, Midwood and Bensonhurst for future generations,” said Councilman Greenfield.

This marks the second tree giveaway event sponsored by Councilman Greenfield. Last fall, he partnered with NYRP and Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in Bensonhurst to distribute 100 free trees to the community as part of the city’s ongoing MillionTreesNYC initiative, which aims to plant and care for one million new trees over the next decade. Sunday’s event is limited to one tree per household and the resident or family accepting it is responsible for planting, watering and maintaining it. The tree must be planted on private property within the five boroughs, and cannot be planted along streets, in city parks, in containers or on rooftops.

Sunday’s giveaway will include four species of trees – Centennial Star Magnolia, Royal Purple Smoke Tree, Dawn Redwood and Brown Turkey Fig – which will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Experts from NYRP will be on hand to discuss which tree is best for each resident’s specific property and to provide tips for how to best care for it and help it thrive.

Since taking office, Councilman Greenfield has made community beautification a top priority. In addition to last fall’s tree giveaway, he has also partnered with Assemblyman Bill Colton for several community cleanup days in Bensonhurst, and has worked with various city agencies to combat illegal dumping along Bay Parkway. He has allocated over $12 million dollars to local recreational opportunities for local families, resulting in improvements at every park in the 44th Council District and a new $3 million public park planned for the rear schoolyard of P.S. 192 on 18th Avenue between 47th Street and 48th Street in Boro Park.

“We have made tremendous strides over the past few years to improve and beautify Boro Park, Midwood and Bensonhurst, and Sunday represents another chance to build on this great progress. I am always looking for ways to improve our local quality of life and make our streets and neighborhoods cleaner and more inviting for everyone. I hope that many residents will stop by Sunday’s tree giveaway and do their part to make their corner of the neighborhood a little greener,” concluded Councilman Greenfield.

Sunday’s giveaway will be held at the Boro Park Y Senior Center, 4912 14th Avenue and is open to all New York City residents. Contact Councilman Greenfield’s district office at (718) 853-2704 for details about Sunday’s event, and visit nyrp.org/brooklyntrees for more information about the four types of trees that will be available.
