Scores of passengers were injured just before noon on Monday when a train traveling from Tel Aviv to Chaifa crashed into a truck stranded on the tracks near Netanya. The exact numbers have been placed at 5 dead and 79 injured and all have been evacuated to hospitals.

The police commander for the Sharon region says no more people are left in the train and the area of the track is being surveyed as rescue equipment is being removed.

Israel Railways has scheduled a news conference for 6:00pm to discuss the incident.

The train was reportedly traveling full speed at the time of the crash. According to Ynet news service, train conductors were warned that a vehicle had breached the barrier at the junction just moments before the crash, but too late for the conductor to brake.

The driver of the truck said his vehicle was pushed on to the tracks by a car that struck him from behind. The train suddenly appeared, he said. I don’t know how I managed to open the door and escape.
