New York City traffic deaths are poised to drop for a fifth straight year and set a new record low.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says in a release Friday that 196 people have been killed in traffic crashes citywide this year as of Thursday, with only four days remaining in the year.

That compares to 221 traffic deaths last year, already the lowest total since record-keeping began in 1910.

The number is down more than 30 percent from 2013, the year before the Democratic mayor took office and instituted a traffic-safety campaign called “Vision Zero.”

It has included lowering the citywide speed limit from 30 mph (48 kph) to 25 mph (40 kph), redesigning intersections and increasing enforcement of traffic regulations.
