Residents in Sderot have been complaining recently of hearing drilling sounds coming from deep beneath the earth. The immediate suspicion is that Hamas is digging a terror tunnel nearby. The IDF has taken the complaints very seriously and has undertaken searches in the vicinity. So far, nothing has been spotted.
With Sderot being about half-a-mile from the Gaza border, it is not impossible to fathom that Hamas would be able to build a tunnel that far. One resident described the sounds to Israeli media outlets in the following manner: “It is a type of echo. It sounds as if the noises are coming from far away, but we can still hear the blows of a hammer. I am very scared. I am trying to convince myself that this isn’t a terror tunnel, but it very scary.”
The IDF spokesperson’s Unit was quoted as saying: “Due to the complaints, the IDF sent a specialized team in order to investigate the matter. Up until now, they have not found any evidence that a tunnel is being dug under or near the city. We will continue to investigate fully any complaint or request for help that comes to us. We will maintain this policy while at the same continuing the construction of the underground barrier that is being and utilizing every available piece of technology and intelligence that have brought about the discovery of many other tunnels in the past.”
