Moti Gil: The Sefer Torah Saved my Life

sefer torah.jpgMoti Gil, Public Security Minister Avi Dichter’s Bureau Chief, reported on Sunday morning that he believes his life was spared in the Friday sniper attack because of his efforts to bring a new Sefer Torah (Torah scroll) to a Sderot shul (synagogue).

Gil sustained moderate gunshot injuries when a terrorist in northern Gaza fired at him while escorting a group of Canadian visitors in Kibbutz Nir Am.

The Torah was given to a new shul established in a Sderot bomb shelter, called Brit Shalom. Gil turned to Kosel Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, who found a suitable Torah which was then passed to Sderot due to Gil’s efforts.

On Thursday, an emotional ceremony was held, dedicating the Torah which previously served at the Kosel (Western Wall).

Dichter also commented on the dedication ceremony, stating he does not recall seeing such true undiluted joy as was the case on Thursday, when the new Torah was dedicated in Sderot.

  1. Not that we needed proof of what we say in davening every day, but the torah truly is “chayeinu viorech yameinu”.

  2. For people like Moti Gil & Avi Dichter – 2 guys from the upper echelons of the “koche v’otzem yode” Tzahal – to announce that a sefer torah saved his life/that he has never seen such undiluted joy etc. is such a tremendous kiddush Hashem, it should be commended and praised without end. It is more difficult for them to make such statement than for “one of us” to learn through gantz shas beiun.

Avi and Gil – if you’re reading this, I want you to know that Hakodosh Boruch Hu is greatly esteemed (kvayochol) by your noble statements. May you merit unchallenged success in all your endeavors, especially in your misions in protecting am yisroel.
