Short Circuit Led to Emergency Landing Procedures

Officials report that the preliminary investigation into a Continental Airlines Boeing 777 turning around for an emergency landing in Ben-Gurion International Airport on Saturday indicates a short circuit in one of the plane’s engines was the cause.

Shortly after the flight took off for the Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey, passengers reported “an explosion was heard” from an engine on the right side. The pilot made the decision to turn around and return home. Some 70 ambulances responded as airport authorities implemented emergency landing procedures.

The plane landed without incident. No physical injuries were reported but many of the 241 people on board were shaken up.
