NYC Congestion Pricing Stalled In Albany

traffic.jpgAs the deadline looms for the city to qualify for federal transportation funding, lawmakers in Albany did not appear any closer Saturday to approving the city’s congestion pricing plan.

The state Legislature has until Monday to sign off on the proposal so that the city can get an additional $354 million from Washington.

But after several closed doors meetings this week, there don’t seem to be enough votes in the state Assembly to approve the plan. The state Senate has not yet voted on the measure, which has the backing of its Republican leader, Joseph Bruno.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who has not supported the plan, has suggested a revised proposal could pass. Sources say that plan could involve tolls implemented on a trial basis, and a state environmental review of the impact of the project.

The City Council has already approved the plan, which would charge cars $8 and trucks $21 to enter Manhattan below 60th Street on weekdays between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. All of the revenue would go toward mass transit improvements.

  1. It would be in the best interest of most State lawmakers (outerboroughs & beyond) to kill the plan since they will not benefit from the revenue generated yet their constituants would be subject to the tax upon entering the city.

Let’s hope they do the right thing and kill the plan.

  2. The whole law was killed because of Chaveirm and Hatzolah members who work on 47th!!
