Pedestrian plazas and expanded bike parking are coming to Williamsburg, Brooklyn, according to a published report.

Brooklyn Community Board 1 last week approved a plan from the city Department of Transportation to set up a pedestrian plaza on Brooklyn’s Broadway near Bedford Avenue, according to a report in the Brooklyn Paper.

The plaza will include chairs, benches and potted plants, the newspaper reported.

The community board also approved a pedestrian plaza on Frost Street close to Meeker Avenue – a plan proposed by restauranteur David Shapiro, who is renovating the former Loreley Restaurant & Biergarten into the new Kingbird Restaurant, the newspaper reported.

Shapiro plans to pay for construction and maintenance of the Frost Street plaza himself through a Kickstarter campaign, the newspaper reported. He told DNAInfo he hopes to include a granite block garden and maybe chairs in the plaza.

In the Brooklyn Paper report, Shapiro called Frost Street an ugly thoroughfare that is misused by dump trucks and garbage trucks – a situation he wants to change.

Meanwhile, two parking spaces will be eliminated in favor of bicycle parking at Driggs Avenue and Grand Street outside the new Williamsburg Cinemas movie theater, and on Broadway near Berry Street in front of Marlow and Sons, the newspaper reported.
