Trump Proposes ‘Worldwide Network’ To Counter CNN Overseas

President Donald Trump is raising the possibility of starting “our own Worldwide Network” to counter news spread internationally by CNN.

Trump said via Twitter on Monday that CNN “has a powerful voice portraying the United States in an unfair and false way. Something has to be done.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what he meant. The U.S. government already operates Voice of America, which last year reached some 275 million people worldwide with news reports from the United States available on television, radio, online and social media.

CNN had no immediate comment about the new criticism by the president.

The president has frequently criticized CNN and its reporters. His administration recently backed down from its effort to ban reporter Jim Acosta from the White House.

It wasn’t known why he was focusing on CNN’s worldwide reach. CNN International is the most widely distributed television news network overseas, with BBC World News second.

Trump said he wanted a worldwide network “to show the World the way we really are. GREAT!”

The president’s favorite news network, Fox News Channel, is available in nearly 100 countries, although not distributed as widely as CNN. The president has complained about being in hotel rooms abroad and having no alternative to CNN.

Voice of America, which began operating during World War II, is also determined to show the United States as it really is, but not through the prism of any particular political leader.

The agency’s charter, signed into law in 1976, says VOA “will represent America, not any single segment of American society, and will therefore present a balanced and comprehensive projection of significant American thought and institutions.”

Voice of America had no comment on the president’s tweet.

  1. I very much doubt that Trump is aware of Voice of America. It seems he wants a state network broadcasting only good news about Donald Trump.

  2. The most incompetent dumbbell ever to hold the office. If he’s such a great businessman, let him start his own network and be quiet.

  3. This is not a good idea.
    It’s a great idea.
On a vacation in Rome a number of years ago during one of the Israeli-Gaza conflicts, CNN in my hotel room , blasted the most one sided vicious “news” not only against Israel, but against the US.
Voice of America has long been a leftie anti-American outfit and is funded in great part by the US government, ie… our tax $$$… Somehow, they hire only correspondents with these soft, effeminate,non-threatening voices but who spew such innocent sounding rat poison against America. all the time.
Thank you Mr. President, through your
    guts, we millions, speak.

  4. ….Beg pardon… I meant NPR, not VOA…
which is a propaganda syndicate funded mostly by NEA, meant for cultural broadcasting… Instead it’s CNN on radio, crawls worldwide… It’s, and I ‘ll borrow Amil’s word…. Pravda …

  5. ZionGate. I suggest you back up your claims that NPR is funded by NEA. What about Exon Mobile, The Casey Foundation, The Ford Foundation and other corporate sponsors of NPR on a national level. Then there are the hundreds and perhaps thousands of small businesses that support local public radio so local stations can purchase NPR programs??? It doesn’t sound like you know how public radio works and you’re just dog whistling.

  6. rt Why are you and others that post comments here so anti-Trump. He is doing amazing work . The economy is booming. He is protecting our borders. He has made trade deals that are good for America and is fighting to to make more. He moved the U.S. embassy to Yerushalayim which shows his support for Israel and the Jewish people. Everyday President Trump is fighting for the American people. He is standing up to the liberals that have been destroying society and want to ruin it further. You can’t be a Torah Jew and have liberal values.

  7. Amil,
I’m not dog whistling…. I’m whistling so that you hear each note…
NEA funds NPR, not 100% , but a whole lot… Check sources, it’s available… In fact , Trump wanted to cut funding, but Congress didn’nt like it…
