Israel Police is recommending the lifting of limitations surrounding visits to Har Habayis by MKs. The request comes four months after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu lifted the ban prohibiting elected officials from visiting the holy site.
According to the KAN11 News report, Jerusalem Police Chief Halevi, “There are no unusual incidents and there is no intelligence about them, so if the situation remains that way – it is also possible to remove any restriction on visits.”
Last summer, the freeze was lifted after more than two years, when Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered the renewal of MKs to Har Habayis. In a letter to the Knesset speaker and the defense minister, Netanyahu announced that every MK could go visit once every three months.
After the attack on Har Habayis that claimed the lives of two policemen in 2017, and the increase in attacks before that, Netanyahu forbade MKs to visit the holy site. Now, with the recommendation of the city’s police chief, it is likely the Prime Minister will lift current restrictions regarding MKs visiting the site.
YWN NOTES: Gedolei Yisrael over the generations and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel prohibit visiting Har Habayis, which they explain carries the punishment of karess.
