The bar is always getting higher, and nobody is keeping up anymore.
What are some solutions?
I know this has been hashed over many times, but today let’s talk some tachlis change.It’s time to move back into small homes, stop dining out, do away with fancy vacations and be happy with little things instead of big things.
Hmm maybe rethink what you’re looking to keep up with, there is a chasidishe saying that works for me in this regard : the reason we have two eyes is one to look down and one to look up.
How so? In physical matters we should look at those who have less than us and praise and thank Hashem for giving us more. In spiritual matters we should look up at others who are holding at a higher level than we are and strive to be like them, and not be satisfied with our current spiritual state.
When things are this way, its all good and we’re happy. The problems start when people reverse them (admittedly that’s the norm which is why the teaching exists…)
Stop running after every stupid desire that comes to your mind and instead use your budget wisely so you don’t need to live paycheck to paycheck.

CS, you are saying what it says בשמים ממעל ועל הארץ מתחת this seems to be obvious, the Klei Yokor and others explain that when it comes to heavenly, spiritual things, look at people above you. Whereas, when it comes to earthly, material things look at people below you.

I don’t understand how people can afford any gashmiyus with tuitions and housing prices being what they are.

We need to stop the peer pressure without creating a communist society where nobody is allowed to be wealthy. Some income/wealth inequality is normal and acceptable as long as people aren’t pressured to spend beyond their means. Financial status is nothing to be ashamed of, and there’s no reason we shouldn’t fargin wealthy people who spend their money on luxuries while others don’t.
lets think about the thousands of dollars spent on weddings, and the debts the mechutanim go into, for things not necessary, but EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING IT SO WE CANT NE DIFFERENT.
