CJP: Zagreb Rabbi Zwye Elieser Alonie told police that two skinheads attacked him over the weekend, the Vecernji List daily newspaper reported Tuesday.? Alonie was walking to the synagogue Saturday morning, when two young men with swastika emblems on their shirts confronted him with the Nazi salute “Juden raus!”, which means “Jews out” in German.
The rabbi, who is still learning Croatian, said he tried asking them if they were aware of the meaning of the emblems. But they pushed and shoved him until he fled.
Alonie, who served in Mainz, Germany, between 2001 and 2005, reported the incident on Monday because of the Sabbath, Vecernji said. It was the second time he was attacked since coming to Zagreb three months ago.
“In Germany those boys would end up in prison only for wearing shirts with swastikas,” he said. “I was told Croatia has a similar law and I hope police will implement it.”
His attackers have not yet been identified.
During World War II Croatia was run by Hitler’s puppet government which vigorously implemented the Nazi racial laws and operated a major concentration-extermination camp in Jasenovac.
Out of the 25,000 Jews living in Croatia before the war, 21,000 perished in the Holocaust.
