Retired Justice Stevens Says Kavanaugh Does Not Belong On Supreme Court

Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens is quoted as saying that Brett Kavanaugh shouldn’t be confirmed to the high court because of Kavanaugh’s potential political bias.

It’s rare for a retired justice to weigh in on a pending nomination.

The Palm Beach Post reports that Stevens, in remarks to a group of retirees in Florida, suggested Kavanaugh lacked the temperament for the lifetime appointment.

Stevens, who’s praised Kavanaugh before, says he’s changed his mind about Kavanaugh for reasons unrelated to Kavanaugh’s “intellectual ability.”

Stevens is quoted as saying, “I feel his performance in the hearings ultimately changed my mind.”

He says commentators have argued that Kavanaugh’s Senate testimony last week showed a potential for political bias.

And the newspaper says Stevens says he thinks “there’s merit to that criticism and I think the senators should really pay attention that.”

The 98-year-old Stevens was nominated to the court by Republican President Gerald Ford and served from 1975 to 2010.

  1. As I said before, any political bias is a direct result of the Democrat’s own abominable behaviour in this matter and it is their own fault. They had plenty of opportunity to bring this matter up earlier and in a proper forum (as example – allegedly Ford did not want her identity revealed? well how come the Democrats did not bring up the matter behind “closed doors” – of which there were many such opportunities – instead of waiting and then going public), allegedly against the .alleged wiishes of the alleged victim!)

  2. He’s right. Kavanaugh’s performance demonstrates that he does not have the temperament to be a Justice. When a person gets angry, they show their true character, and Mr. Kavanaugh showed that he is not impartial. The Supreme Court requires that the person put the good of the country before any personal opinion or emotion.

The person I feel sorry for is Chief Justice Roberts. This court has his name on it, he’s responsible for how it’s conducted and what happens will go down in the history books associated with his name. Having a justice who throws rage tantrums is’t going to help him do his job, or uphold the dignity associated with the Supreme Court.

If Mr. Kavanaugh is confirmed, it will give the Supreme Court a blow to its credibility that will be very hard to recover from.
