More than a dozen people were hurt, including seven firefighters, when a six-alarm fire erupted in the East Village early Wednesday, a blaze that continued to burn beyond five hours despite 250 firefighters at the scene.
The fire broke out on the first floor of a five-story apartment building on 1st Avenue between East 11th and East 12th streets just after 1:45AM.
Flames spread to a small section of rear of the building, which partially collapsed and could safely not accessed by firefighters.
Seven firefighters were injured – one of them with serious injuries. All other injuries to firefighters were considered to be minor.
All residents in the building were evacuated as well as two neighboring buildings. It’s not yet known what may have sparked the blaze.
Smoke and firefighting activities in the area caused the cancellation of classes at the East Side Community High School and Public School 19.
Commuters are urged to avoid the area.
