Gedolei Yisrael Shlita decided to convene to appoint the new head of the Vaad HaYeshivos with the realization the gezeira of drafting bnei yeshivos demands filling the leadership position. As such, the gathering was held on Tuesday night in HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman’s Shlita home in Bnei Brak. Also in attendance were HaGaon HaRav Nissim Karelitz Shlita, HaGaon HaRav Gershon Edelstein, HaGaon HaRav Shaul Alter, HaGaon HaRav Menachem Ernster, and HaGaon HaRav Eliyahu Shmuel Shmerler.
HaGaon HaRav Shalom Cohen, Rosh Yeshivat Porat Yosef and a member of Shas’ Moetzas Gedolei Yisrael was also in attendance.
HaGaon HaRav Chaim Aaron Kaufman was appointed in a unanimous decision as the new head of the vaad as was expected.
The rabbonim discussed the worrisome situation surrounding ongoing efforts to compel bnei yeshivos to leave the beis medrash to serve in the IDF or an approval national service program.

The current situation is a severe crisis. Under some plans, including Likud’s and Lapid’s, yeshiovos that oppose conscription may be closed, and their students taken by force (either to the army or prison).
Perhaps the hareidim should “think outside the box” and recruit some very bold people from “outside” the traditoinal hashuvah families to lead the charge. One should note that the only time the hareidim were able to even scare the hilonim is when their representative was a western educated baal tseuvah (and admittedly, the zionists were so fearful of him they shot him).
Of course it was a unanimous vote, they are interesting in projecting an Achdus which may not necessarily be there.
But its not looking good for Charedim in coalition.
It is unimaginable to picture, Lechtigeh, Heimishe Kinderlach, having to out to the dangers of battle. Just picture the faces of these Yiddishe Mammes. We must all work along with the Rabbonim to be Mivatel this Gezeiro.
