The Latest: Chareidi Parties Continue Deal-Making Ahead of Israeli Municipal Elections

Shas chairman Minister Aryeh Deri met with Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav, which might be a benign event since he is the Minister of the Interior, however, with municipal elections weeks away, voters are not that naïve.

Clearly, the meeting between Deri and Yahav on Wednesday, 18 Elul, the two discussed more than routine municipal affairs, as Shas has yet to announce which candidate it is supporting in the Haifa mayoral race.

Note: Deri is wearing sunglasses due to a recent medical procedure involving his eyes.

Jerusalem Bayit Yehudi Candidate Isn’t Planning To Make Any Deal With The Chareidim

The Bayit Yehudi party, like the Shas party, has yet to announced which of the candidates it is backing in the Jerusalem mayoral race.

The dati leumi Srugim website reports that a deal was reported made between Bayit Yehudi chairman Minister Naftali Bennet and Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman of Agudas Yisrael, by which Bayit Yehudi will back Agudas Yisrael’s candidate, Yossi Deutsch. However, according to the Srugim report, the chairman of Bayit Yehudi in Jerusalem, Chagit Moshe, in response to the reported deal involving the national party leader added, “If he agreed in a deal to go with the chareidim, and we think differently, we will make a different offer to the public”

Moshe added, “I did not see any deal, but read about it in the newspapers. There will be no deal with the chareidim. If I do make a deal with the chareidim, the tzibur will know! I give my word on this” she added.

Moshe did not stop there, but had words of criticism for the party leader, Naftali Bennet, citing she is doing what is good for Yerushalayim while Bennet does not keep her in the loop regarding his activities. She adds, he does not meet with them or update them regarding is activities vis-à-vis the Jerusalem elections.

Moshe stresses however that she has no quarrel with Bennet, but adds Bennet has not addressed her directly or via his representative regarding any dealings with the chareidi parties.

She was asked by Srugim if there is a possibility that the national party will endorse one candidate for mayor while the Jerusalem faction will back another. She stated she “I promise we will not get to that. We will select a candidate and Naftali will give his bracha”.

Rav Silman Categorically Denies Rumors Pertaining To Elad Municipal Elections

HaGaon HaRav Yehuda Silman Shlita, who has been acting as the agent of Degel Hatorah’s Moetzas Gedolei Torah regarding negotiations for upcoming municipal elections, dispels a rumor that has been spreading pertaining to the elections in Elad.

A rumor was spread surrounding the yet-to-be-settled machlokes between Shlomei Emunim and Degel Hatorah in Elad, that Rav Stern announced his support for Councilman (Degel Hatorah) Avi Stern for the mayoral position. Rav Silman has categorically denies the rumor, citing negotiations are still taking place and he never made such an announcement, not about Stern or any other candidate regarding the Elad elections.

In the meantime, talks surrounding the elections in Beit Shemesh and Elad between Degel and Shlomei continue, with the sides signaling they are heading to arbitration due to their inability to reach agreement.
