Mayoral Candidate Yossi Deutsch Publishes an Open Letter Attacking Jerusalem Construction Freeze

Jerusalem Deputy Mayor (Agudas Yisrael) Yossi Deutsch, a candidate in the city’s mayoral race, has published an open letter to residents of the capital, in which he attacks the Jerusalem construction freeze. Deutsch insists that candidate Minister Ze’ev Elkin, who leads the race today according to latest polls, will not be able to build in the city due to his commitment to his political patron, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

“Barkat and Elkin would like to build in Jerusalem, but the difference between them and me is that they are committed to the prime minister and I am not committed to the prime minister. If they are asked by the prime minister, who is also their political patron, to freeze construction, they have no real choice but to obey. Elkin’s dependence is even greater than that of Barkat … I respect Netanyahu, but I am really not obligated to him … I do not intend to obey the freezing orders … ,” explains Deutsch.

  1. There are two sides to the coin, I have seen Rabbi Deutsch first hand at Safra Square promote converting all Jerusalem neighborhoods to look like Meah Shearim, He pushes through construction and expansion of buildings in areas that are already congested and whose infrastructure cant possibly or properly serve the needs of the residents. He cares more about the cries of families who buy small apartments and want them to magically become larger apartments, than the neighbors who will be hurt by the expansion. Rabbi Deutsch believes in irresponsible construction (in his own words, why cant all of Jerusalem look like Meah Shearim?) that will lead to overcrowding and unhealthy living conditions. Caveat Emptor.

  2. To add, ” Deutsch insists that candidate Minister Ze’ev Elkin, who leads the race today according to latest polls, will not be able to build in the city due to his commitment to his political patron, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu”
His implications are unfounded , he brings no proof or record that Elkin has said such a thing . It is certainly not the Torah way to make false accusations .
And who is to say that Rabbi Deutsch will be more successful in persuading Netanyahu??
