Israel: Additional Cases Of West Nile Virus Are Reported


There are a growing number of cases of West Nile virus being reported in Israel, Health Ministry officials reported on Wednesday, 11 Elul. According to reports, there are eleven new cases, bringing the total number of cases that have been reported since the beginning of the year to 68 nationwide. Of these cases, 48 have been confirmed, while the remaining cases show all the signs, but medical professionals await final confirmation.

On Tuesday, health officials reported an 18-year-old male was in Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva, admitted to an intensive care unit and connected to a respirator. His condition is reported to be “very serious”. There is a total of six persons in serious condition around the country. Some have sustained neurological damage from the virus. One is admitted to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv.

Health Ministry officials explain that data from 2011 to 2017 documents a sharp increase in the illness during the months of June and July. In addition, there is a documented increase in the number of animals infected as compared to earlier years. The ministry also reports that up to 16 August 2018, the illness has been found in persons in 38 communities around the country, including five cases in the north, 16 in the Haifa area, 15 in Tel Aviv, two in Ashkelon and one in the Beersheva a area. The main area where the illness shows a sharp increase are the coastal and Shvelah areas. Health officials add that at present, there is no vaccine available today.

Dr. Arik Hess, an expert in infectious diseases and public health at the Ministry of Health adds there are steps that can be taken. He recommends that everyone use the various products available to repel mosquitoes and to wear long sleeves, particularly in areas with high infection. Dr. Hess adds that the Health Ministry is working in conjunction with the Ministry of Environmental Affairs to eliminate the mosquitoes.

If one is bitten by a mosquito, it is recommended applying a substance that soothes the itching sensation to the site of the bite. In case of acute allergic reaction or if a fever develops – one should consult one’s doctor.
