Shas Confident it will Follow Livni’s Lead This Week

After the signing of The Movement party into the coalition, it appears the chareidim are next in line. Shas is signaling it is working hard to complete and agreement and join the coalition by week’s end. Ynet reports Shas is moving ahead towards closing a deal this week.

Shas officials quoted by Kikar Shabbat on Tuesday 9 Adar 5773 state regarding the sharing the burden issue, they are confident they will reach a formula viewed as acceptable by Gedolei Yisrael.

It appears Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is also picking up the pace with Yahadut Hatorah, apparently resigned to the fact that Yesh Atid and Bayit HaYehudi will not be entering the coalition, at least for the time being. Reports indicate that Yahadut Hatorah will likely sign an agreement to enter the coalition before Purim.

Realizing that Bennett and Lapid are not likely to sit with the chareidim, it leaves the Labor Party, or at least those Laborites viewed by the prime minister as potential defectors to shift over and enter the coalition to give the prime minister the required majority.

  1. #1 – Not so fast. Bibi has still got to sign Bennett or Yechimovich or break off a large faction from some party, none of which are remotely in the bag and, in fact, seem quite unlikely. If Yechimovich won’t join, Ben-Eliezer won’t jump ship and Bennett doesn’t blink – Bibi is in a bind. Interesting times.

I believe R’Shach ZT”L decided that UTJ should not accept a ministerial position on principle – though I am unfamiliar with the reason. This is why until now the ministry of health was officially held by Bibi and UTJ held the position of deputy minister.

  3. #5 – Maybe. But if he doesn’t, Bibi is faced with two extremely uncomfortable choices: (1) Cancel all the coalition agreements and start from scratch with Bennett and Lapid (in which case I’d really hate to be in the shoes of UTJ and Sha”s), or (2) Go to elections after just having (i) caved into the charedim (ii) given Livni authority over negotiations with the Palestinians and, probably (iii) having offered the treasury to Yechimovich. In essence, Bibi has just gone all in on a bluff. Question is – will Bennett call it? Time will tell.
