Payback: Bayit Yehudi Says ‘No’ to Shas on Chief Rabbi Deal

Bayit HaYehudi officials have informed Shas leaders there is no deal regarding the latter’s effort to secure the dati leumi party’s support in the upcoming elections for new Chief Rabbis of Israel. The reason appears to be a ‘pay back’ for Shas’ backing out of a deal that would have led to a Shas-affiliated rav for Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Yerushalayim in return for Shas’ support for a dati leumi Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Yerushalayim.

Bayit Yehudi wishes to decide on both rabbonim, unwilling to play their faith in Shas any longer.

Kikar Shabbat quotes a Shas official as saying one cannot connect between the two chief rabbi races, insisting “We made deals with the dati leumi all around Israel and Shas made good on those deals, as was the case in Petach Tikvah.”

  1. This political dealmaking and backstabbing by chashuve rabbonim and their political alignments puts all these different rabunit in a negative light

  2. “We made deals with the dati leumi all around Israel and Shas made good on those deals, as was the case in Petach Tikvah.” — If these deals were made all around Israel then why is Petach Tikvah, the only example??

Rav Avraham Shapiro zt”l was an excellent Ish Gadol as Chief Rabbi of Yerushalayim, accepted by many, and it would be appropriate now to go into the son’s hand.

  3. If Lapid gets his way, you won’t have to worry about chareidi or dati leumi fighting each other for chief rabbi since the chief rabbi will be REFORM.
