Deri Most Likely to Assume Shas Leadership Title

Aryeh Deri is likely to be appointed party leader once again if Shas manages to cut a deal that will include the Sephardi chareidi party in the coalition. According to a Yisrael Hayom report, “senior officials” in Rav Ovadia’s home have signaled it is clear the three-way leadership arrangement by which Deri, Eli Yishai and Ariel Atias share the title is not going to work out in the long term. It was far from overly successful in the short term during the weeks prior to the general elections.

The anonymous officials add “there is a great deal to do if we are in the coalition, in Knesset and on the municipal level” indicating that there will be jobs and titles to satisfy all concerned. The report adds that both Yishai and Deri are extremely close and dear to Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita and he would never harm them in any way.

It does appear that if Shas enters the coalition, while he will be a cabinet minister, Eli Yishai will have to relinquish the title of party leader. The source adds that if Shas does not enter the coalition there will be changes too, but the plans may change.

  1. What a horrendous mistake?
Does the SHAS party read the writing on the walls? Most of the Knesset and citizens of Israel are suspious of Deri and his motives and trust Yeshei. Why remove a capable leader? It makes zero sense.
