Clalit Hospital Equip with Shabbos Thermometers

The Histadrut affiliated Clalit Kupat Cholim (HMO) announces that its hospitals will now be equipped with a thermometer that is permitted for use on Shabbos l’chatchila. There are two types, a personal; adult thermometer and an infant thermometer strip.

The new thermometers have been tested and reportedly accurate, permitting their use in hospitals, and they do not contain harmful substances as is the case with old fashioned thermometers.

The media release does not indicate which rabbonim have tested, checked and approved the new thermometers, which will be offered to frum patients during a hospital stay.

  1. Could someone offer a coherent explaination of why having one’s temperature taken on Shabbos is a concern that warranted special shabbos thermometers, especially if the nurse was a non-jew. If someone is ill enough to be hospitalized, why is this even a question l’chatchillah.

  2. You mean a manual thermeter (as opposed to an electronic one). Why would a standard non-electronic one be a problem? It isn’t like they are exotic or expensive or unusual.
