Lieberman Wants the Chareidim, Not Yesh Atid

Yisrael Beitenu leader Avigdor Lieberman wants the chareidim in the coalition, not Yesh Atid, the Shas affiliated Yom L’Yom newspaper reports. The newspaper explains that despite reports in the media to the contrary, Lieberman prefers the chareidi parties with their 18 seats to Yair Lapid’s party with 19 seats.

Shas leader Eli Yishai is continuing efforts to form a religious bloc to include Yahadut Hatorah and Bayit HaYehudi, but to date; the latter does not seem interested in signing any agreements with the chareidi parties.

  1. That would suggest he is willing to compromise on conscription in order to have a coalition partner who won’t make trouble for his hawkish foreign/settlements policies (on which Hareidim usually support whomever is supporting them).

  2. #2- With Lapid being the “bad cop” demanding mass conscription and threats of prison, Lieberman can be the “good cop”.

  3. I think Lapid does not want Lieberman in any of the powerful minsterial positions (foreign etc.) and there is no love lost between the two, irrespective of the conscription issue.

  4. The likely main reason Lieberman doesn’t want Lapid is personal. Lapid would be a natural as Foreign Minister, a position Lieberman plans on returning to.
