Nine years after leaving the office of prime minister, during which he managed to make history and become the first prime minister ever to be sent to prison, Ehud Olmert boasts of a new job – the chairman of a new public council – to lead a healthy lifestyle and prevent diabetes.
The Council established an association called “From Now”, which defines “education and awareness of balanced eating and expansion of physical activity in focused work with government ministries, the Knesset, the bureaucracy and other decision makers to influence budgeting, legislation and regulation, building power centers for the general public and the political system, and working with local authorities, ethnic groups and sectors.”
In addition to Olmert, who served in the past as Health Minister, Prof. Itamar Raz (who serves as chairman of the National Diabetes Council) will also serve as chairman of the council, and Prof. Mordechai Shani, former director general of the Health Ministry and director of the Sheba Medical Center.
Not long after the initial announcement of the establishment of the council, the organization published a clarification statement stating: “Ehud Olmert – voluntarily joins the new public council of the association from today – to a healthy lifestyle and prevention of diabetes, like the other members of the council, Prof. Itamar Raz”.
According to the announcement, “Olmert’s choice stems from the fact that Israel is in a severe crisis, and this is a problem for the prime minister, which is a problem for the finance ministers, the economy, education, sports, and of course the Health Ministry, which is currently alone in the battle. The intention is to lead the struggle to a healthier lifestyle to a completely different stage.”

If Deri can come out of prison and become a political leader of Shas, why can’t Olmert get a job too?
Everyone will surely wish Mr. Olmert success in promoting healthy lifestyle choices amongst Israel’s citizens. Perhaps he could draw on his own experiences to come up with innovative strategies to encourage people to exercise more. Maybe paying people a modest sum for walking? Maybe paying them twice for each journey?
Should I send my check to the Council, or send it directly to Olmert to save him the trouble of having to embezzle it from the Council?
