Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday 17 Shevat 5773 met with a bipartisan delegation from the US House of Representatives led by Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA). The Prime Minister said: “We’ve had very close cooperation on all things, including the developing matters in Syria, very close cooperation between our two governments. I think this is important for the stability of the region, for the security of Israel and it’s much appreciated.”
Rep. Wittman said: “We deeply value the relationship between the United States and Israel. With all the challenges in the region, as you spoke about, we are very committed to make sure we are here to understand the challenges and where we can help Israel meet these challenges and make sure that the region operates in the best interests of all.”

Why would US congressmen/women meet with a foreign prime minister who has just received an electoral rebuke and is in the process of trying to assemble a coalition government, of which there can be no assurance of success? Possible answers:
1. The US congressmen/women are ignorant of Israeli politics and do not realize that this is an inappropriate time to be visiting the Israeli PM.
2. The US congressmen/women are merely pandering to US Jewish voters, so the trip is for show purposes only.
3. The US congressmen/women are kibbitzing in Israeli politics.
4. Mr. Netanyahu wants to look “prime ministerial” by meeting with foreign representatives of a major supporter of the state of Israel, perhaps as a way of strengthening his negotiating position in the formation of a governing coalition.
5. All of the above.
