Getting caught speeding or talking on the cell phone while driving in New York could become costlier.
Budget proposals from Gov. Andrew Cuomo would limit plea deals for speeders clocked more than 20 mph over the limit and expand the $80 state surcharge on traffic tickets to cover the parking violations speeders often plead down to.
Cuomo wants fines for talking or texting on the phone while driving to be at least $50 and rise to a maximum of $550 for multiple violations. There are currently no minimum penalties.
Cuomo’s budget memo released earlier this week said the stiffer fines will prod phone users to change their ways.
The changes would eventually bring in $25 million a year. Cuomo says they’d also make the roads safer.

The Governor is driven around the state by Tax funded State Trooper’s in a Tax funded SUV could talk on his phone, work on his laptop/tablet/ipad, while we the taxpayers just sometimes need to talk while driving, we have no other choice, we don’t have Tax funded vehicles with drivers, we pay high taxes on gas, we pay extremely high Tolls and the Governor wants to balance the budget on our back, Shame on him!!
So fining is to make money and not to prevent accidents… hmmmmmmmmm…….
Simon01 has “discovered America”, as is said in Israel, and has told us that “The Governor is driven around the state”.
There lies the difference. The governor does not have his hands on the steering wheel, nor is the governor responsible for the safety of passengers in the gubernatorial limousine or other road users.
Given that, what possible objections could Simon01 have to the governor “talking on his phone, working on his laptop/tablet/ipad”?
