Candidate In Jerusalem Mayoral Race Will Have To End Machane Yehuda Nightlife To Receive Backing From Gur

Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman is demanding the closure of nightlife Machane Yehuda as a condition for supporting a candidate in the Jerusalem mayoral race as per demands from officials in the chassidus. On Sunday night, 20 Sivan, both candidates Moshe Leon and Ze’ev Elkin announced they would not act to close down the nightlife in the shuk.

The question some are asking is why this is so important to Gur. The response lies quite close to the shuk, less than 100 meters away from Yaffo Street. If one leaves the shuk via Yaffo Street one is seconds away from the tziyun of the Imrei Emmes and Pnei Menachem of Gur ZT”L, which has been the target of drunk vandals, persons who enjoyed the shuk nightlife and left their unwanted signature at the tziyun.

Officials in the chassidus have already reported to chareidi journalist Yair Shariki that several months ago, two young men entered the tziyun while quite intoxicated, and possibly under the influence of drugs too. This resulted in quite a scene, a “most unpleasant one” as they describe, without detailing the event.

It appears that as a result, Gur is demanding the closure of the shuk’s nightlife in return for the chassidus’ support of any candidate running in the Jerusalem mayoral race.

  1. For real?!
Of all the Holy City issues ,this is the one they’ll pick to show their religious muscle?!

  2. This is a perfect example why we should pray that the chareidim should never ever be able to take over the government, because if they God forbid did,Israel will look exactly like another Iran or Saudi-Arabia,they will have TZNIUS-POLICE roaming the streets and giving lashes on the spot to women who are not dressed according to their standards.
What a CHILLUL HASHEM these ignorant savages are causing, don’t they realize that MOSHIACH has not arrived yet,and we live in a pluralistic and democratic society and you cannot force your religion down anyones throat.

  3. Fine. If these chareidim was business owners to close their shops at night with their parnasah taking a big hit, then I want the condition that all yeshivos and kollelim will close at night in order that this group works. If a drunk/drugged individual is causing havoc in your neighborhood, call the police. Such chutzpah.

  4. Machane Yehuda is fairly disgusting at night and that aspect of it should be closed. But that’s because it’s unseemly, not because it’s near a chassidishe grave. Once they start saying that pritzus should be eliminated only because it encroaches on chassidus they’ve kind of removed themselves from the klal. That having been said, it will never happen regardless, because it’s too big of a money maker. And even if a candidate promises that he’ll do that, there’s zero percent chance of him being successful.

  5. chugibugi ” chareidim should never ever be able to take over the government”

    Which Charedim?
That’s a false claim in a public forum. מוציא שם רע
“,Israel will look exactly like another Iran or Saudi-Arabia,they will have TZNIUS-POLICE”
In which Charedi run city do such things exist [sanctioned by the city council ?Arad?

We are in this world for the purpose of ? Bringing Moshiach .

Many are out there and here (mouthing piousness ) whose goals are ..very different
And we have too few working in whatever endeavor towards that goal

  6. The obscenely anti Torah comments posted here are utterly unbecoming of a frum website. Imagine, instead of at Machane Yehuda, some business owners decided to open a similar outdoor hangout in one of the settlements in Yehuda or Shomron. How would you react then? Would you also be in favor of a pluralistic democratic approach to this new addition to the neighborhood? You and all the dati leumi rabbis would be moving heaven and earth to prevent it or to close it. Tznius police would be understandable if this were to happen at Itamar or at Elkana or in Hebron. It’s just when those greasy Chareidi fanatics make any kind of demands — then we are subjected to an earful about pluralism and democracy. So, when the Knesset will bring up the matter of same-gender marriages in Israel — and it will come up soon, you’ll see — and since about 60% of the Israeli public supports allowing such marriages, will you also bow to pluralism and democracy? Furthermore, above those kiosks and sidewalk cafes are scores of private apartments with families and with children living in them. Are they entitled to some peace and quiet at night, or does pluralism and democracy dictate that invading drunken revelers take precedence?

  7. american_yerushalmi ,
you weakened our argument rather then strengthened it

“similar outdoor hangout in one of the settlements in Yehuda or Shomron. How would you react then? Would you also be in favor of a pluralistic democratic approach to this new addition to the neighborhood?”

Many Dati wouldn’t care at all . Many mock at ” dati leumi rabbis would be moving heaven and earth to prevent it”

“. So, when the Knesset will bring up the matter of same-gender marriages in Israel — and it will come up soon, you’ll see”

It came up already .Fortunately ,in The Chok Klali it states marriage is 1 man 1 woman {originally put there primarily to gain a consensus back then against polygamy} so the Baga”tz was forced to agree to retain Sanity for this era .
However, be afraid ,very afraid All it will take is one bad Coalition e.g.Lapid ,Labour ,Leiberman and Left and
    we could crash fast

  8. To chugi bugi and all other נשים ועם הארצים That are worreid of tznius police.
You’re comments are the biggest chillul hasten possible! Shame on you!

  9. Putin
Have you a problem reading and comprehending the English language? ,please read again my post and you will see I prefaced my comment ,that MOSHIACH has not arrived yet,and therefore we cannot force non religious Jews to live according to TORAH law, just like you understand that we cannot force Jews here in America or any other place to become frum Jews,so to in Israel being that 80% of Jews are not religious we cannot force our life style on them,
God willing when MOSHIACH will arrive ,then and only then would that RAMBAM become HALACHA and BEIS DIN Would institute our constitution according to the laws of the TORAH

  10. Just to clear up some confusion, Litzman is not talking about the tziyun of the Rebbe as the reasoning. The official reasoning is as american_yerushalmi put it, that it disturbes the thousands of residents who live near Machane Yehuda. YWN is adding what they believe is the underlying reason.
