Update On Grandson of Chareidi MK Who Was Caught With Millions In Cocaine At Ben Gurion Airport

Additional details surrounding a story reported on YWN last week, of a young Chareidi man in Israel arrested at Ben Gurion airport after police discovered he was transporting cocaine into the country.

A daughter of MK Menachem Eliezer Moses, Heidy, tells Kan News that she has no doubt that Baruch Klein, the 22-year-old grandson of MK Moses, is covering up for someone “as that is his nature,” indicating that he alone would never be involved in such an act and he is clearly unwilling to speak.

The young Klein was tapped by customs agents for a bag check when he appeared suspicious. A customs supervisor explained this has nothing to do with being Chareidi or not, but about their keen instinct and realizing something was suspicious about this arriving passenger.

Customs agents found millions worth of cocaine in a double-walled suitcase as well as in bottles that appeared to contain wine, but in fact, contained liquid cocaine. He was arrested and arraigned and remanded for an additional 13 days as the investigation continues.

Attorney Talya Gridish explains the drug dealers often use young men and women from the chareidi tzibur without criminal records to smuggle in their cargo. She explains in recent years, this has become increasingly common. At times they are aware of what they are carrying, while some are simply that naïve, unaware of just what they are doing.

One young chareidi woman, identified as ‘G’, explains that someone she knew offered her a free trip to Europe including a shopping spree – with all expenses paid. “I thought he wanted to take me on a romantic trip. When we arrived in Amsterdam he told me ‘let’s change your suitcase which is so bulky. Use this one, which is far more valuable’. We got back to Israel and in the terminal, he switched suitcases and told me he would get my other suitcase back to me at a convenient time.”

That man was apprehended in Ben-Gurion a month later and the entire scheme unfolded as his suitcase was full of drugs. This led police to ‘G’, who was informed she is a suspect in drug smuggling and conspiracy. “I then realized I became a victim,” G explains to the media.

Customs shift supervisor Yoram Aaroni explains to the media that in the past two years there has been an alarming increase in attempted drug smuggling at the airport, citing cocaine, ecstasy and other dangerous drugs.

Heidi arrived at the courthouse to attend the remand hearing for her nephew on Thursday, 18 Iyar. She expressed her concern, questioning who will protect him and make sure he remains well.

Judge Guy Avnon explained there was sufficient evidence tying the suspect to the crimes he stands accused of as he was carrying a commercial quantity of cocaine. Police are doubtful regarding Baruch’s insistence that he was unaware there was cocaine in the wall of the suitcase, but Heidy, his aunt, remains confident of his innocence.

The Kan News report adds that no one representing the Vishnitzer Rebbe Shlita was present for the remand hearing, seemingly distancing themselves from 22-year-old Baruch despite the fact MK Moses is the Rebbe’s shaliach in Knesset.

After the Rebbe announced he is indeed behind Baruch, the entire family and Askonim are now working and preparing for the next court hearing.

Heidy is well-aware of the severity of the case, pointing out “He would sit in prison for ten to fifteen years without a good attorney”.

While this report is a continuation of a story addressing charges against one suspect, it is a reality that involves too many people from good Chareidi homes, and readers are advised to take it to heart and not naively say “It cannot happen in my family”.

Enormous sums of money, time and resources are being used today to assist the growing number who have fallen prey to drugs in one way or another, while insufficient funds, awareness, tolerance and understanding are at times major contributory factors for so many good young people losing sight of an acceptable Derech in today’s world which is no longer black and white, but often many shades of grey.

  1. Funny how YWN expresses so much interest in this case, where the guy brought it on himself, yet ignores the countless bochurim and yungerleit who are in jail right now even though they went to register.

  2. I dont think he should go to prison but he shouldnt be freed till he tells who paid his tickets and gave him the suitcase,
There is no mitzveh refusing to say because those people who talk them into are murders and killing our children.
They are Rotzchim and have a din of a roytzach.

  3. One young chareidi woman, ‘G’ whose identity is blurred, explains to the camera that someone she knew offered her a free trip to Europe including shopping – all expenses paid. “I thought he wanted to take me on a romantic trip.

Who ever heard of a Chareidi men taking a women they aren’t married to on all expenses paid romantic trip to Europe?

  4. @Smerel — That got me too. What in the world? Maybe it’s a lost in translation thing but I do NOT understand that line.

Perhaps the story happened while she wasnt so relgious.
Why always think the worst in someone you dont know.

  7. Dear YWN,

Stick to news in a news article and opinion in an op-ed. The first two paragraphs of this article should be deleted if it’s a news article. Post them as a separate opinion article if you want.

  8. “…while insufficient funds, awareness, tolerance and understanding are at times major contributory factors for so many good young people losing sight of an acceptable Derech in today’s world which is no longer black and white, but often many shades of grey.”

Can someone please explain what this sentence means?

  9. “After the Rebbe announced he is indeed behind Baruch, the entire family and Askonim are now working and preparing for the next court hearing”

Something indeed was lost in the translation….I doubt very much either Rav Hager, shlita, or anyone close to the Rebbe was behind this drug smuggling case and there is no proof involving Rav Hager to this misguided yong man.

  10. Just sad and nauseating that a “chareidi” woman is comfortable saying on camera that she thought she was being taken to amsterdam by some male she barely knows for reasons of romance.
Forget the drugs for a minute…
What is wrong with the chareidi world??

  11. maybe the fact that the boy isn’t frum would cause the family at the beginning to distance themselves, or the fact that as a chareidi mk’s grandson gives this story it’s headline.
by the way does anyone know if Heidi is frum, Ywn are you knowinly leaving out info or “by mistake”
it seems that the Yeshiva part of YWN is to know how to read between the lines

  12. “A customs supervisor explained this has nothing to do with being Chareidi or not, but about their keen instinct and realizing something was suspicious about this arriving passenger.”
    Really? He was so suspicious?
Either he was set up to take revenge on his grandfather, or he was set up to have someone else being able to swing through meches un-noticed while they were busy with this BIG catch.

  13. For all who didn’t understand, ‘one young charedi woman’ is obviously a member of a charedi family who has some issues, not an unknown phenomenon in today’s world…

  14. @Rebyossel Hes only endangering your kdis because you probably didnt raise them properly. my kids are not in danger from this guy maybe your kids are , but thats your fault not his.

  15. Who ever heard of a Chareidi men taking a women they aren’t married to on all expenses paid romantic trip to Europe?

Who says they weren’t married? It might also be her brother or father.

  16. “Why does no one on this site believe that just maybe he was a willing part of a drug ring?”
I think your missing the point…the majority of posters believe he WAS a willing part of this smuggling effort although he probably didn’t expect to be caught or perhaps assumed his zeydah would get him out of any trouble if he was caught. Hopefully, if the facts are proven, he will be sent to prison for al long time as a deterrent since there seem to be too many of these episodes where chareidi bochurim get involved in these incidents.

  17. Gamanit: If it’s her brother or father taking her on a romantic trip to Europe, that is much worse that a non-relative, on many levels.

  18. Yankelle….you are reading some really weird stuff into the comment…..I’m not sure the initial comment implied some type of forbidden physical relationship between her and father or brother. Lets leave it at that.

  19. Yoffi, the video clearly talks about Heidi’s religious affiliation. She’s very open about it.

It also sheds a bit more light on the “G” situation.

  20. > Gamanit

“Who says they weren’t married? It might also be her brother or father.”

Are you joking? The article states clearly “a romantic trip”. And as far as a husband is concerned, since when is a husband taking his wife with him on a trip described as “a free trip”?

  21. > maier

So far it is revealed he was paid $4000 just to carry a suitcase. Is he really so naive at his age not to wonder what in the suitcase is worth paying someone $4000.

  22. > maier

    “Really? He was so suspicious?”

It is rather sad that you are spewing such ignorance and hate. Going as far back as at least 1986, the Hindawi affair. To quote Wikipedia:

    > On the morning of 17 April 1986, at Heathrow Airport in London, Israeli security guards working for El Al airlines found 1.5 kilograms (3.3 lb) of Semtex explosives in the bag of Anne-Marie Murphy, a five-month pregnant Irishwoman attempting to fly on a flight with 375 fellow passengers to Tel Aviv.

Exactly how did they discover the bomb? The anti-Semites came out with exactly your argument – framed by the Mossad!

    Whats even more neusiating
Is that a supposed charedi youngster imported had no qualms importing heavy duty illegal drugs to be distributed in the streets of israel. Your so worried about what a charedi woman supposedly said but your not concerned about drug activity by the charedi uber mention.
