Why should people from Western cultures get to impose this taboo on anyone else? People who don’t have the obligation to eat kosher should be able to eat even the types of animals that are kept as pets. Also, we kill plenty of dogs and cats anyway, so why is it more wrong to eat them?

If pigs can be killed and eaten then cats, dogs and horses are no better.
According to some quick web research, it looks like in most states, there’s no law prohibiting eating your pets.
And even if it’s not legal, it’s probably easy to get away with, as long as you’re discreet about it. (“What happened to your dog?” “He ran away.”)
Actually if you adopt they usually put a tracking chip into the animal. So if you eat it, you’ll tell them it ran away and they’ll see it ran into your stomach.

Dogs (& cats) have been bred as companions for tens of generations – a strong bond exists between humans and canines, so much so that dogs are considered as family members.“dogs are considered as family members.”

Absolutely NOT! Unwanted animals that cannot be placed in shelters should be euthanized or kept alive, instead of eaten! We need these animals for science, especially medical science.

When you are the majority culture you get to impose your views on everyone else, thus in America, we don’t eat horses or dogs or cats (though in all fairness, no one eats cats, whereas dogs and horses are eaten in many countries). Note that many countries prohibit eating pigs as well. Same principle.

Why it’s very hard to get cats and dogs for Science.
Scientists would not want to use random animals from a shelter for medical experiments- too many variables, too many differences that will distort the results and make it impossible to interpret the outcome of the experiment. Did Fluffy live longer than Fido after taking medicine X because medicine X worked, or because Fido was weaker after living on the streets for 2 years?
Scientists who use animals like mice and rats use ones that are bred for that purpose- their genetic background is known and the same in all animals used for the experiment, they are matched by age and often gender, they are kept in sterile, germ free housing, they are fed the same food, have the same day/night cycles, etc. Research with larger animals is rarer, mostly because they take longer to breed and are more expensive to keep, and are not as practical, although sometimes it is necessary to use a larger animal more similar to a human, like monkeys for neuroscience research.Why should scientists use cats and dogs over cows?

Health, I gave facts, not assumptions. Personally, I don’t count college anatomy labs as critical medical research. I think science will continue even if college kids don’t get to dissect a cat. In these days of computer simulations, I wonder why it is even necessary for most people taking science courses to do any animal dissections- can’t it be done virtually? How many of these students will actually need that sort of experience for their actual careers? Med students will dissect cadavers in med school, that should be enough.

Granted, these are legitimate reasons as to why scientists should prefer cats and dogs over cows. But they don’t justify forbidding cats and dogs for citizens, but legalizing them for scientists. You need animal dissection because there aren’t enough cadavers! A lot of medical courses have gone the computer simulation route.

Has anyone tried making fake cadavers using vegetable sources? After the medical students are through with their dissection exercises, they could eat the cadavers (or donate them to the local food bank).

You missed the point of my comment! My point wasn’t on the legality. As far as I know, it’s legal to eat dog or cat meat!
