Coalition Chairman David Amsellem On A New Draft Bill

Coalition Chairman (Likud) David Amsellem on Monday afternoon, 15 Iyar, that there are stormy political times ahead as the coalition must navigate a new draft law while maintaining a stable coalition. He told Kikar Shabbos News in a Knesset interview that he believes the coalition partners are not looking for early elections and if one respects the other, it is doable. However, he is aware that the matter at hand, the new draft bill pushed by the chareidi parties, has a considerable amount of opposition in the coalition, from both the Kulanu and Yisrael Beitenu parties, as well as among some lawmakers in Likud.

The chareidim have drawn their line in the sand, stating if the bill is not passed by the end of the current session they will move to elections. This was emphasized just last week by Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman.

The other matter that will rattle the coalition according to Amsellem is the bill to circumvent the High Court of Justice, which is being pushed by Bayit Yehudi.

Lawmakers are fed up with having laws disqualified by the High Court, and they are now seeking legislation that would limit the authority of the High Court by giving the Knesset the authority to overrule its rulings with a simple majority of 61 of the 120-seat Knesset.

  1. Very well then. The summer session of the Knesset runs until Rosh Chodesh Av, that’s not a lot if time, but let’s see what they come up with.

  2. Let us end the Coalition crisis, the social crisis and save billions of Shekels at the same time. Let us end the draft. It is not needed and only causes military and social harm.
