Deri: Drafting Chareidim May Lead to Civil War

Aryeh Deri told the media “I am very concerned” regarding ongoing and increasing IDF efforts to draft chareidim into the military. Deri explains that in the absence of a new Tal Law the IDF will step up efforts to draft chareidim, adding “I fear chas v’sholom this may lead to civil war.”

The Shas Yom L’Yom newspaper quotes Deri adding “I have nothing against [former Foreign Minister Avigdor] Lieberman. He is a good friend of mine but he represents a new civil agenda that is not in line with Shas’ Torah way. The days in which Shas and the Sephardim simply accept the government as if the latter is doing us a favor and giving us the postal or other ministry are long gone.”

Shas’ campaign has shown Lieberman in a black yarmulke with the caption that a vote for his party will lead to assimilation.

  1. So it is ok to take money from the state, benefits from the state, insurance from the state and provide zero services to the state in return for what they give you while others die to keep these freedoms and benefits available to you and the answer is fear of assimilation?

  2. Shas is all about one thing – who will give the most money to Shas. I’d bet that if someone offered Shas $1 thousand for every chareidi brought into Tzahal, they’d sell their own sons.

  3. A civil war will require Hareidim to start shooting zionists. It’s not the Hareidi style. However some conscripts will prove to be unwilling to obey orders, and might engage in “monkey wrenching”. More importantly, the non-zionist hareidim (i.e., those who do not accept government money) are likely to engage in various forms of civil disobedience which will be a public relations nightmare for Israel, since most goyim who support Israel do so since they see Israel as having religious significance, and such claims would be undermined if the hareidim are protesting that the state is treff (its not a problem if Neturei Karta does so since they have dozens of members, but when it becomes thousands and tens of thousands it will be a major threat to the continued American support Israel needs).

  4. It’s not going to happen. There will be mass civil disobedience, lots of riots, etc, and eventually the govt will back down.

Which makes sense, because they don’t really want them in the army anyway, and the whole point is to reduce their political power and to make the chilonim resent them. So, everyone will win.

  5. There is a courageous necessity for Charedi parties or representatives to sit down and discuss the new TAL LAW, rather than just let it expire.

The time is now to discuss options rather than using rhetoric.

  6. Everything that Deri has done and said since his return to politics is a Chillul Hashem. He should never have been let back into government.
