Egypt’s top mufti has issued a fatwa, or a religious decree, saying that buying Facebook “likes” is prohibited under Islam because it’s a form of fraud and deception.
Grand Mufti Shawki Allam regularly issues all sorts of fatwas, usually in response to questions by Muslims seeking religious guidance in matters related to even the most trivial issues.
The questions are asked of the Dar al-Ifa, the Sunni Muslim institution in charge of religious rulings, mainly based on the Muslim holy book of Quran and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.
The mufti posted on the institution’s Facebook page earlier this week that it is “religiously prohibited” to pay someone to click a “like” on a promotion.
Allam says “it’s deceptive,” citing Muhammad’s saying, “He who deceives is not of us.”

As a site that purports to be a FRUM site, how can you say explicitly ‘the Prophet Muhammad?’ That’s borderline kfira.
I realize that this was originally an AP story, but seriously, you need to edit and/or not post if you can’t.

Why is everyone criticising YWN for such petty reasons without one comment in defence? First, this piece of news is certainly of interest to frum Jews. It is actually a good question about genevat daat. Interesting to see how Muslims also have their own style of “lomdus”. YWN is clearly not just about Jewish stories but stories that interest Jews. As for the “borderline kefira”, Mohamad was a prophet, just a false one. Oxford dictionary definition of prophet: A person *regarded* as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God. This very accurately describes Mohamad. Reread the definition if you disagree.
