Shas party chairman Minister Aryeh Deri warned on Tuesday, 2 Iyar, that it is forbidden to completely weaken the Supreme Court, along with criticism of Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, who seeks to restrict the High Court’s ability to disqualify laws enacted by Knesset.

In an interview with Radio Kahan on Kol Chai Radio, Deri said, “We must not completely weaken the court because we need ‘moreh shel malchus’. However, it is inconceivable that we as ministers and elected officials decide things like infiltrators or the draft law, just to have the court disqualify them. Therefore, I believe there must be balance. It is inconceivable that when there is a panel of three justices and two justices, and they disqualify a law that was voted on by a Knesset majority of 61. ”

Deri criticized Minister Ayelet Shaked’s proposal that the bill may be passed to circumvent the High Court with a simple majority of 61 MKs. “Unfortunately, the justice minister gave more power to the courts with her bill. The Government of Israel’s hands are tied because of the Supreme Court. Last week, the prime minister also understood that the courts’ problems are very difficult, and therefore he is looking for balance.”

“We are in favor of a formula for an expansion clause that will include the draft law. We are working on this issue quietly and not in the spotlight, and we also meet many times with security officials in order to reach an agreement. Our instructions from Gedolei Torah are that a talmid wishing to sit and learn without being disturbed be permitted to do so, without sanctions. Therefore, if the expansion clause includes this stipulation, then we have succeeded in removing the problem”.

“Apparently all our entanglement with the infiltrators came from Shomayim to solve the recruitment problem,” concluded the Shas chairman.
