Israel marked its annual Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism on Tuesday with somber ceremonies and a one-minute siren that brought the country to a solemn standstill.
Sirens wailed at 8 p.m. across the country, prompting Israelis to stop in their tracks and stand silently with heads bowed to remember the dead – 23,646 fallen soldiers. 71 of the soldiers were added to the list since last Memorial Day. In addition, 12 civilians were killed in terror attacks in the past year.
On Wednesday morning, 11:00AM, a two-minute siren will be heard all over the country, followed by ceremonies throughout the country including many military cemeteries.
On Wednesday night at 8:00PM, Memorial Day ends, marking the beginning of Israel’s 70th Independence Day celebrations.
