Senator Simcha Felder and Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein have once again succeeded in securing free door -to -door after hours transportation for students in any public, private or parochial school with classes outside the hours of 9 -4.
In its first year, the program provided free door-door transportation to 7,500 students. Today, only five years later, over 22,000 Brooklyn kids arrive home safely every evening.
“People thought it would never happen,” said Felder, “but we won a landmark victory that year and every year since. We succeed in defying expectations because we care about children’s safety and making life easier for families.”
“For far too many years, children were denied safe and free transportation because of their late dismissals,” said Assemblywoman Weinstein. “Through our efforts, myself and Senator Felder, have been able to include and expand the coverage of this vital program for children at even more schools, and continue to remove a significant financial burden off of parents working hard to provide for their families.”
“I’m grateful to Senator Flanagan, who as Chairman of the education committee successfully debated free, door to door transportation on the Senate floor and continues to show his support for our children and families,” expressed Senator Felder.
No eligible school is turned away from the program. As a result, funding must increase annually to avoid a shortfall that would result in certain service cuts, sure to impact negativey on the safety of young students arriving home after dark.
“Every year, I fight to ensure the safety of our kids comes first. As long as I’m here, I am determined to protect this program and guarantee there are no service cuts that would leave parents footing the bill,” declared Senator Felder.
