Kulanu Faction Leader: It Is Time To Reach Agreement Regarding IDF Draft Law

No one is quite sure where the current coalition in Israel is headed and whether or not the current crisis between the Charedi parties and the parties of Yisrael Beiteinu and Kulanu will be resolved orwill lead to an eventual election. According to a report that appeared on Sunday in Kikar HaShabbos, the Kulanu faction will not allow the “extortion of the Charedi parties” to continue.

MK Roey Folkman, Director of the Kulanu faction said: “The Charedi parties pulled out their new conscription law right before the Knesset okayed the budget, which is good for everyone. This type of maneuver is dishonorable. While there are coalition agreements regarding the conscription law, it is a delicate matter and not everything that the Charedim want will be accepted. There needs to be a balance. That is why a professional, non-political team was established to create a new law. We will need to come to some sort of agreement on the issue. Just as Lapid’s previous use of force against the Charedi populace wasn’t acceptable to me, so too is a use of force by the Charedim, and their ploy to stall the passing of the budget at the last moment and their show of force against the general public is equally unacceptable. If the Charedi parties choose this path, then there will be consequences.”

Folkman concluded by saying: “The time has come that the Charedi population understands that they are not a small marginal segment of society anymore. Decisions that are made by the Charedim and for the Charedim affect the entire country. They are part of the government coalition and they need to take that into account to. It is time to reach a compromise and agree on a law that can be suitable for everyone.”

  1. The oil is very simple. We believe that learning Torah protects the country and the people. It is therefore our opinion that anyone who wishes to learn Torah should be allowed to. If someone wishes to go to work, he should be required to do something for the country. The Army is not the solution. The mixing of the genders in the army is a big issue for us.

  3. The only solution that will work and be acceptable for everyone would require abolishing conscription (switching to an American style “volunteer”, i.e. professional) military, while offering reasonable accomodation to hareidim who wish to serve in the military (as opposed to begrudging toleration, which is what is now offered). A benefit of this is that it would improve Israel’s military capacities, and would encourage hareidim who wish to be Baal ha-haBatim to do so without fear of being drafted – enriching the hareidim community and probably giving a macroeconomic boost to Israel.

That’s totally ridiculous. How then would they be able to be oiker yiddishkeit? That’s never going to fly.
