Israel: The Growing Cost of Defense

The Magic Wand missile defense system, also known as “David’s Sling” was hailed a success this week when a first test led to the system downing an ‘enemy missile’.

The new system is a longer range version of the Iron Dome, which saved countless lives during Operation Pillar of Defense, which ended last week.

While the development of such a system is welcome, or even necessary due to the growing threat of Hizbullah missiles, the cost of the missiles is no less impressive than their abilities to track and intercept missiles fired from a range of 75-250km (46-155 miles), estimated to be about $1 million per missile.

  1. How much does it cost Hamas or their backers per rocket? Let’s say we only include their longer range rockets which costs them slightly more… If we gues $100 per such missile of theirs and our missile to shoot it down costs $1million, then I think we will run out of money before they run out of rockets.
