Minister of Agriculture Uri Ariel visited Machane Yehuda and sent his message to the tzibur from there, before Tu B’Shevat.
His message is a simple one, to buy fresh Israeli produce from Eretz Yisrael for Tu B’Shevat, explaining “it is without sugar, cheaper, healthier and we support ourselves”.
He explains when one buys dried fruit, one supports [Turkish President Tayyip] Erdogan and those like him so the point is to support the vendors in the shuk and the Israeli farmers. “In galus they did not have such produce and bought inferior items but today we can buy produce of Eretz Yisrael”.
Ariel was asked about his backing of the cannabis market for medical use, explaining he is a major backer of the crop for medicinal use only and not for recreational smoking, citing it is a market of “hundreds of millions of dollars” and Israel leads the world in converting cannabis for medicinal use and its research. He is also encouraging the growth of medical cannabis since “This is the next crop for Israeli farmers which will provide significant income”, further explaining the medical community realizes that cannabis today has properties to assist millions of people who suffer in pain and have no other alternative.
