NY Tri-State Area: Hazardous Road Conditions Following Freezing Rain

ice roads.jpgA winter storm has arrived in New York City, bringing flakes and bitter temperatures. The weather is causing messy conditions on the roads and highways, making for a dangerous evening commute.

As of 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, precipitation filled clouds hovered over the tri-state area, while temperatures stayed in the teens and lower 20s, providing cold enough air for the snow to stick – WCBSTV reported.

There have been HUNDREDS of car accidents – as streets were turned into sheets of ice. Approximately 30 accidents reported on the Belt Parkway alone. Most were reported to be minor, although there were three school-buses involved in accidents – with two of them overturning.

Hatzolah members in all NYC neighborhoods were busy running from accident to accident.

Additionally YWN received reports from Lakewood that the roads turned hazardous following a small snow-fall which turned into freezing rain. Northern New Jersey – including Passaic reports numerous car accidents and icy conditions on Route 21.

YWN is urging all readers to use extreme caution while driving tonight.

The WCBSTV / CBS2 HD meteorologist reports:

“Precipitation of some kind is expected to persist into the late afternoon hours, which is when the city and areas south will begin to warm up.

Precipitation will continue to fall until around midnight. At the current pace, inches of snow may be on the ground by this point in New York City and the surrounding areas. By then, warmer air should work its way into the tri-state, allowing for mixed precipitation.

By the late morning hours on Wednesday, all areas will have changed over to rain as warmer air from the south will have completely invaded the tri-state area.

Light to moderate showers will persist through the day, as well as warmer temperatures, reaching a high of 48.”
