Religious Fugitive Convicted of Murdering Palestinian Extradited to Israel Following 13 Years of Living Abroad

Former Itamar resident Yehoshua Elitzur who was convicted of killing a Palestinian 13-years-ago and fled Israel, has been brought back to the country and will face a court hearing to determine the rest of his sentencing.

Elitzur was convicted of murder in 2005, after he opened fire on a Palestinian van driver in 2004. When the time came for his sentencing 2 weeks later, Elitzur didn’t show up. Investigators had found that he had fled the country.

Interpol issued a worldwide arrest warrant for Elitzur and for many years the International Division of the Attorney General’s Office worked together with Interpol and the Israeli Police in order to find Elitzur and bring him to justice in Israel.

In 2015, Elitzur was arrested in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Israel requested that he be extradited to Israel. Six months ago it was announced that Brazil’s Supreme Court agreed to the extradition request.

Today his extradition was completed and he was taken from Ben Gurion airport by police officers from the Samaria region. Tomorrow morning he will be brought to a sentencing hearing at the District Court of Tel Aviv.
