While Ashdod City Hall is reportedly looking for non-Jews to train and employ as Shabbos inspectors, the city’s deputy mayor, Gabi Knafo, used his Facebook page to send his message to the tzibur, that efforts to enforce this new law in the city will be most difficult.
Dror Shoshan, who owns a café in the Big Center, asked Knafo what he is to do, since he is certain he cannot afford to remain open if not for the Shabbos business, yet if he operates, he will receive stiff fines.
Knafo responded, “The restaurant will not close! Continue serving the residents of Ashdod!”
Dror than asked “What’s the true interest in this process”, to which the deputy mayor responded, “Friends, restaurants and cafes will continue operating on Shabbos without disturbance”.
