Jerusalem Chief Sephardi Rabbi, HaGaon HaRav Shlomo Moshe Amar Shlita has filed a request with the Jerusalem Religious Council to remain for a second term of five years. Rav Amar and his ashkenazi counterpart, HaGaon HaRav Aryeh Stern Shlita, were elected about two years ago.
The reason Rav Amar is applying now, so early into his term, is that he is approaching his 70th birthday so an special decision would be required to accommodate his situation. Such requests have been met positively been made in a number of cases, accommodating rabbonim who have reached retirement age permitted to continue serving.
