At least 12 people, including a 1-year-old child, were killed in a large apartment building fire in the Bronx on frigid Thursday night.

The 4-alarm fire broke out just before 7 p.m. on Prospect Avenue near East 187 St. on the third floor of the five-story building.

More than 170 firefighters responded to the fire, battling through cold and icy conditions.

In a press conference Thursday night, Mayor Bill DeBlasio said “this is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city — it will rank as one of the worst losses in a fire in many years.”

The death toll has surpassed any fire in the the city in the past 25 years.

“We may lose others as well,” de Blasio said.

The fire started on the first floor and quickly spread upstairs, said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, who noted that the casualties occurred across different floors and the victims ages ranged from 1 to over 50.

Nigro echoed the mayor’s words, calling the fire a “historic” tragedy.

A spokesman said at least 15 victims were removed from the building. 4 of the victims were in critical condition.

The patients were taken to Jacobi Medical Center and St. Barnabas Hospital.

The New York Times reported the building was constructed in 1916.

Temperatures are in the teens in New York, with winds making it feel like single digits.

The Office of Emergency Management and the MTA sent buses to the location to accommodate residents that have been evacuated from the building.
