15,000 Chareidim to be Summoned to Begin Induction Process

In the coming days, a ‘first draft notice’ will be mailed out to 15,000 young chareidi males 17-19-years-old to begin their induction process into the IDF, Haaretz reports.

The report goes on to explain that this does not signal they will be inducted, but the start of the process which will take a year or more, a move that is compelled under law following the abolition of the Tal Law.

The report quotes a “senior military official” anonymously, stating that today’s reality demands the military begin addressing the new legal status that resulted with the abolition of the Tal Law.

It appears that while the military wishes to begin the process to leave all options available down the road, a new law may be legislated prior to these men being drafted for active service.

  1. This is the existential threat. Iran is at most a nuisance.

In the “worst case” scenario, the army will be seriously weakened if the Hareidi conscripts are disloyal and insubbordinate, not to mention the possibility that accomodating Hareidim will alienate the hilonim. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

If non-zionist Hareidim start requesting conscientious status, the Israeli will have a serious international problem if they deny, and a serious domestic problem if they grant it. And then there is the problem that pro-zionist Hareidim won’t necessarily obey orders if their rabbanim object, e.g., to dismantle Jewish communities in the West Bank.

And I’m not getting into anything that isn’t strictly a “this world” analysis, since the halachic objections to abandonning Torah in order to play soldier are well known.
