IAF Commander Grounds Fighter Planes Over Safety Concerns

Israel Air Force commander Major-General Amir Eshel on Sunday 28 Tishrei 5773 grounded all fighter planes to permit a review of safety regulations and operating guidelines. This is attributed to a number of safety violations in recent weeks, incidents that included life-threatening situations.

As a result of the commander’s order, all training exercises have been halted to permit pilots and navigators to participate in a review of the regulations.

The event that most likely prompted the commander’s move was a near miss during which two fighter planes were 100 meters from one another during a training exercise. Making things worse, the pilots of those planes were both senior officers, Brigadier-General Ziv Levi and Brigadier-General Ilan Boger.
