Vishnitzer Rebbe: If You Have a Treif Phone, Don’t Come for Kvitlach

Thousands of chassidim waited on line Rosh Hashanah night to wish the rebbe a ‘gut yohr’. The atmosphere was electric as many chassidim from outside Eretz Yisrael and from areas outside of Bnei Brak arrived to spend yomtov with the rebbe.

During a tisch on Tuesday, the second day of Rosh Hashanah 5773, the rebbe delivered words of hisorarus, addressing smart phones and the danger posed by the phones. He stated the “Treif phones result in a spiritual Holocaust”.

“I am witness to hundreds of avreichim and heads of families who simply fell spiritually, beginning with their pasul phones” the rebbe stated. “At times, a person comes to me for advice or a bracha, and their treif phone is in his pocket. He comes to me with a bomb. Go home. I do not agree to accept kvitlach from one who has such a phone” the rebbe told the thousands present.

  1. Isn’t this a bit overdone. Are the rebbe’s gaaboim going to install a metal detector and search everyone seeking a baracha for a cellphone and test whether the phone has internet access? Should kvitlach be denied to somone who may not yet be ready to cut the links with the internet world but is nonetheless seeking support and encouragement from the rebbe to move closer to yiddeshkeit?

  2. And is a “kosher” phone really kosher if it’s being used for Loshon Hara and Nivel Peah. I don’t see how these stories can be taken at face value.

  3. my phone is parve although it fell in the chicken soup once. It is not really treif since I don’t use it when I eat milchiks. can I still bring a kevetel??

  4. Similarities between Kosher phone and non-kosher phone.

    Both may ring during davening.
Both may be used for loshon hara.
Both will take precious time away from learning.

Let’s all go back to the rotary phone.

  5. Yes fellow commentors, it is sincere. And although you seem unaware, it is Aseres Yemei Teshuvah. It’s not too late for you – although you will need help.
