Chabad Woman Will be Spending Yomtov in IDF Prison, Not 770

The Kiryat Malachi recently married Chabad woman arrested after being listed as AWOL from the IDF will not be spending Rosh Hashanah in 770 in NYC,as she and her husband planned, or in Kiryat Malachi with family. Instead, she will be spending all of the Tishrei yomim tovim in IDF lockup.

YWN-ISRAEL reported the young woman, who was married a bit over a month ago, realized that when she was 17 she did not address her IDF status as required. Wishing to travel to 770 this Rosh Hashanah, she went to authorities to report that today; it is not relevant because she is married. It should be pointed out that when she was 17, she would not have served either, but simply declared she is frum, signing a number of forms, and head home.

Nevertheless, it appears someone wishes to make an example of the young lady, and she was sentenced to 50 days in prison by a military court on Wednesday, 18 Elul 5772. This includes Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkos.

She is being permitted food from Kfar Chabad after launching a hunger strike.

Chareidi MKs criticize the inaction of the young woman, for ignoring her responsibilities when she was younger but had harsh words for military authorities who see nothing wrong with imprisoning a young frum married woman for all of the yomim tovim over a her bureaucratic nonfeasance as a teenager.

  1. Rav Avigdor Miller predicted that the level of hate against Religious Jews in Israel would become so great that they would suffer physical abuse at the hands of the secular ruling class.

At the time everyone thought his prediction to be too extreme.

    Now, what do you think?

  2. Both sides have legitimate arguments but perhaps there is a compromise whereby she would spend Rosh Hashana in jail but be released in time for Yom Kippur. This would still provide some deterrent value for others not be negligent with their reporting obligations while still allowing her some time with her family for the yom tovim.

  3. Chabad has been very sympathetic to the zionists (at least recently, some would say, especially since their last Rebbe is no longer around to object). So, this is actually a “slap in the face” the many Chabdniks who have been supporting the medinah.

I wonder if “Neturei Karta”‘s new slogan will be “I told you so”.

  4. well, there is a saying in Chabad (that since all of the Rebbes except the last one spent time in jail), ‘if you don’t go to jail, you are no one.’ or something like that.

Hope her time in the jail gives her the opportunity to bring a few more nashamas closer to their Maker.

  5. It is most unfortunate that this women has become the first of many victims of the psychotic hatred of Ehud Barak for the the Torah community. But if his goal is to send a message, then I would think he has succeeded. The message I received is to never, never have anything to do with this Government of national betray.

  6. This is pathetic. There’s no excuse for the behavior of the Israeli military court. True, she made a mistake, but that’s not a reason to punish her like this.
Where are tzahal’s rabbanim? How come they’re silent? Would they be silent if it was their daughter?

  7. Of course she is being made an example of. The Army allows all frum girls to opt out. Don’t do and you are in. Don’t turn up and you are AWOL. All pretty straightforward stuff. The Army does not operate on the basis of shtibel law and everyone knows that. This is presumably why the Haredi MKs are seemingly doing nothing more than spouting harsh words. Sometimes it is better to keep your fire power for a real cause.

  8. Yes my friends, there you have it. The real face of the wonderful Zionist country. If this was a leftist from North Tel Aviv they would be walking after 10 days. When dealing with the religious person it becomes 50 days. Israel is such a wonderful G-d given land, the governing party on the other hand are anti-religious, leftist, Jew haters! Let the truth be told!

  9. I quote; “she went to authorities to report that today”.
No civilized country would imprison someone who voluntary reports a bureaucratic issue.
Yup they cetainly did send a message.

  10. Sorry folks but this young women is learning a very important lesson in responsibility. Religious girls do not have to serve but they must fill out the papers to be released.

  11. Stop attacking Israel. I have tremendous sympathy for this young woman, but she messed up, either through ignorance or through “the rules aren’t made for me.” I think the sentence is very harsh, but again, she could have avoided it by taking care of things in a timely fashion. It’s called “responsibility” – every action (or inaction) has a consequence. I hope she is released early, even if she can’t come to Crown Heights for Yom Tov.
