Hello,
I’m a BT and not familiar with all of the various mesivta options around the tri-state area.
I keep hearing references to the Harvard of Mesivtas (Philly) or the Yale of Mesivtas (Long Beach). But I wasn’t able to find any online resources listing the various options and their respective strengths or focus areas. My kids are not yet at the age where selecting a mesivta is imminent, I’m assuming their rebbes will be able too make recommendations when its time to apply but I’m asking more for my own benefit and interest.
What are the (yeshivish/black hat/litvish) mesivta options that are considered the “elite” schools, or does such a thing even exist?

There are no “elite” schools……only administrators who think their schools cater to the “elite”. Ask your friends where they send their children and what they think of the mesivta. Is dorming an option or do you want your children home every night? Is a strong Limudei Chol department important? My sons have attended yeshivos as diverse as Mesivta Rabbi Chaim Berlin, Yeshiva Chofetz Chayim (Queens), Meon Hatorah (AKA “Roosevelt” now in Monsey), Belle Harbor. Each of my sons was included on the decision. Some wanted to dorm; others didn’t. Some wanted a challenging Limudei Chol department; some not. If dorming is not an option, then Philly and Long Beach are not even in the realm.
Another question is whether your son’s elementary school has a mesivta. If yes and your child is finding success, why switch?
Look for a yeshiva where your son will shteig in torah, middos and yiras shamayim. If he does he is in the right place, if he doesnt, look for a new place.
There’s always a trade off between limudei kodesh and limudei chol. An improvement in one necessitates at least a somewhat lower quality in the other.

When your son reaches the 8th grade, speak with his rebbe and/or menahel for guidance. speak to your rav.
Been there, done that. There’s most definitely a trade-off. The greater focus a yeshiva places on one detracts from the other. There are only so many hours in a child’s school day.

Don’t kid yourself. If a yeshiva eliminated limudei chol, they can easily improve both the quality and quantity of Limudei Kodesh.
What people refer to as elite yeshivas are not necessarily the best place even for a smart kid. One kid may be crushed by the pressure in riverdale. Another may not do well by having 35-40 kids in his shiur in Long Beach. If your kids are not at the age when you are making a selection, don’t even think about it now. Your job now is to learn with him when you can, inspire him to grow, encourage him and be a good role model. Don’t forget to daven for his success- that is really key. Tears when saying birchas hatorah is very powerful. Much more than the decsision of which yeshiva to toy with. (they might reject you anyway if you do not have the right money or yichus)
